KAYANA PROPERTY – KOH SAMUI

THAI ADAPTATION

Our focus for this art direction work was to create a vision for a lived-in, welcoming beach house merging with its natural site.

We had to really adapt and fine tune the property features to the client’s actual way of life, because that is the key to any successful design. There are of course standards and ratio that can serve as basis but what really matters in the end is the usage of the life spaces, for example we turned the 4 bedrooms into 3 bedrooms with a spacious master suite. The master bedroom was re-orientated to enjoy a sea-view.

Some functions had to be reorganized and some had to be added in order to link indoors and outdoors. We also created eye-catching views from the entrance of the house, and a visual narration to elicit a sense of belonging and protection and authenticity.

4 different life spaces were implemented, a master suite (with a Spa), a life pavilion composed of the kitchen, dining and living room adjacent to the swimming pool, an entertainment pavilion with a video room and bar, and a guest’s pavilion.

The Art Direction expressed itself through the choice of materials allowing a double alliance between tradition and modernity on one hand, and indoors and outdoors.

For the main pavilions, we used wood cladding for the ceilings in order to provide a sense of depth and modernity, along with stone of soft and delicate hues for the floors.

The ambiance is enriched by the well-chosen furniture composition: a mix of sober-lined, comfortable, deep sofas and individual seating suggesting organic tropical life.
The goal here was to create a blend of modern and refined Asian touches to generate a unique style revealing the owner’s personality.

Texture-rich materials are used to touch up bathrooms, toilets and bar tops…

We used petrified wood, shagreen, bronze, beautifully veined marble, onyx in a way that would not appear ostensibly too luxurious while being of outstanding quality.
We also worked with Jim Thompson fabrics which are a major reference in Thai design.

The villa’s signature is the bar, its most emblematic feature.
It is designed as an inspired cabinet of curiosity hosting the owner personal collection of art and objects.

The whole project’s goal is to create the perfect balance of simplicity and strong visuals.
This ambiance is established upon entering the property in order to generate a feeling of well-being.
